how important is the weight and shape of a pommel to a swords harmonics? not static balance or pivot points but the harmonics of the blade once it has struck something. realizing that what we are talking about here is constrained variance in shape and weight. (+/- 100grams in weight, wheel vs scent stopper etc)
my belief is that a swords harmonics are primarily determined by the mass distribution of the blade and tang itself, and although there is a dampening effect on vibrational waves traveling from blade through tang to pommel, it is rather slight and unlikely to effect the location of the primary nodes much, if at all. tr |

The weight of pommel does not really affect the location of the primary node on the blade, but it does affect the location of the other node, the one at the handle near the cross on a mounted sword. If you put an heavier pommel this handle node will go towards the pommel. If you had a really enormous mass there the vibrations would not be able to move it at all and the node would be on the pommel... The effect is very noticeable, a bare blade is not "harmonically balanced". Actually that is arguably one reason why the pommel is necessary (the other imho more important one being the effect on rigid-body dynamics that you mention).
The shape of the pommel is significant only if it alters the center of gravity of the pommel. A priori I'd say it's second order compared to the weight, because the CoG variation will always be quite small as long as the pommels have roughly the same size. But that's an effect you might see if you take for example a long scent-stopper pommel and mount it in the opposite way, thin bit towards the nut...

IMHO, pommel shape has more to do with whats comfortable and estheticly pleaseing. Any clunky chunk of the right size and weight would work. But, if its ugly and uncomfortable, who would want it. _________________ "Do not suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberty by any pretences of politeness, delicacy or decency.
