HASTINGS XXXXI; 10/23-25/2009

Markland’s 40th Anniversary

October 23, 24 & 25; Friday through Sunday

Location: King’s Landing Park, Calvert County, Maryland: http://www.calvertparks.org/Parks/Ki...ng/KLPhome.htm

Public Admission: FREE

Participant Fee (to cover park fees and rentals): Full participant- $20, spouse(s) & older dependents- $10, dependent children or chattels under 18- free (Please note that $20 would have been about $3.49 in 1969.) IF we have enough participants, (over 100) we will lower the fee; therefore the site fee will be collected on site to provide maximum flexibility.

Medieval, modern, and cabin camping: $1.00 a night (to be paid to park).

Set-up begins Friday; modern and cabin camping on the hill behind the equestrian facility. (Horsemen have first choice, as well as families and folks with special needs.) There is also another modern and cabin camping area a few hundred yards away. Cabins have plank bunks (you need a sleeping bag) and each holds eight to ten bunks. There are fire rings and pits at each of the two camping sites.

Medieval camping and display area will be near the equestrian area.

LSCo members may also sleep aboard the Sae Hrafn, or under the Gyrfalcon. (Just get everything squared away in the morning!).

Merchants: Merchants will be considered participants; crafts, clothing, weaponry and food are acceptable in a medieval context. We’ll expect any participating merchants to set up a proper medieval display, and keep track of all tax and other regulations.

Alcohol Policy: Bone dry during all public hours; discretely wet (beer and wine; includes mead, of course) after closing hours. All “litter” from such activities are to be personally packed away and packed out by the participants!

Park Hours: Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. We will have the gate open to participants until 11:00 p.m. on Friday night. Weekends, 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. The gate will be open for participants until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights Please note that once the gate is closed we will be in for the night (except for an actual emergency), so please plan accordingly.

Activities: Longship voyages (day and night), faering voyages, cavalry demonstrations, battle reenactments, arms and armor demonstrations, daily living displays, fun and good fellowship celebrating 40 years of survival.

Proposed Schedule:

10:00 Longship Voyage

12:00 Equestrian Events

2:00 Battle Reenactment

Throughout the day: Equestrian, maritime, cultural and military demonstrations as desired.

Event ends at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

After-hours events:

Friday night- Possible longship torchlight evening voyage at dusk; followed by hang-out at pavilion.

Saturday night- Longship Company short voyage at dusk. 40 year celebration at pavilion.

Sunday: Go home (except longship crew for down-river voyage who wish to sleep aboard).

Fighting Styles: Basically Markland style reenactment fighting, but other styles are acceptable if paired off against each other and approved by the Battle Master. Well-crafted wooden weapons (or other realistic, but safe weaponry within the 1066 scenario) are encouraged for the non-steel qualified. English fyrdsmen with axe and club are a good standby. See http://www.markland.org and http://www.larp.com/midgard/ for information on clothing, arms, armor and rules.

Longship Company Activities: Participants interested in participating in longship or faering voyages may wish to review the manual, linked at http://www.longshipco.org . We may do some daytime and nighttime photography aboard the ship; with illuminating torches in the evening!

Provisions: Bring your own is the best policy, but we’ll all gather at the pavilion near the equestrian center on Saturday night for a shared feast, songs, and old times. There are a number of merchants nearby on Rt. 4, and major shopping within 10 miles.

Further details may be found, discussed, and beaten about on the Markland forum: http://www.markland.org/dingwall/ the Hastings Group Yahoo bulletin board: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hastingsgroup/ and the Longship Company Yahoo bulletin board: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/longship-company/

I am postng the above for my friend Bruce Blackistone (Atli to his friends) and for the Longship Company. I hope to be there, health permitting. Atli is attempting to make arrangements for me to stay offsite as I need an electrical supply for my CPAP, otherwise my snoring would keep the entire camp awake. Laughing
